Trauma Recovery Takes Courage

Trauma recovery takes courage, grace, and, eventually, the ability to forgive someone whose own woundedness interfered with an abuse victim’s personal growth.

When we can allow ourselves to feel emotions we were required to suppress to maintain acceptance in a family system, we begin to heal.

One of the deepest needs of a trauma survivor is to be seen, heard, and validated. We do not receive such support from a dysfunctional family system.

We must accept not all are prepared to do the grueling work required to heal the branches of their family tree.

To heal, we must break free and begin planting new roots in healthy soil. The new root system will be established if others pursue emotional wellness for their bloodline; survivors become the leaders.

Genesis 37–50

Support systems exist, even if we don’t find them for 50 years.

When victims begin practicing self-care, we find ourselves in communities with others who also practice life-honoring lifestyles. We detach from the emotionally immature expectations of those who make us think visual perfection is life’s greatest goal.

There are places outside of our abusive home environments where our tender hearts are valued. Getting there means letting go of everything we previously considered to represent care in exchange for something better. Meanwhile, we must honor the emotions we were forced to hide, not to inconvenience the narcissisticly abusive system.

Abuse victims are willing to remain in painful environments because we have been brainwashed in fear of rejection, and we settle for breaks in the pain as enough.

We fear life if we were to detach from the narcissistic system, which has run our mind for enough time that we abandoned ourselves and anyone who would be able to rescue us from the hands of narcissistic abuse.

If you need to heal from trauma, you must start with self-care. Recognizing your life is worth investing in is imperative to recovering from domestic abuse.
