I was fortunate enough to detach from the narcissistic system that was killing me.
I have so many friends whose children have significant illnesses, mental, physical, and emotional. I am a product of generations who have neglected trauma. Unfortunately, in these situations, traumatic abuse becomes intergenerationally projected onto our children, genetically and behaviorally.
Many have developed dysfunctional lifestyles that are accepted as healthy and normal in comparison to the lifestyle of our struggling ancestors.
Many dysfunctional families have increased in size to provide enough support for the unhealthy adaptations designed to win the approval of others under a facade and avoid self-reflection, the remedy to narcissism.
The study of Epigenetics and generational traumatic bondage is uncovering how unresolved trauma is surfacing in the DNA of our legacy, who never experienced trauma.
Many children are being born with specific behaviors and adjustments to the trauma endured by ancestors that no one talks about.
In addition to the effects of unresolved trauma on the DNA, survivors develop coping mechanisms, like OCD, eating disorders, skin, mutilation, addictions, obsessions, and denial of deep pain, among others.
When we do not take care of ourselves, we ultimately end up protecting children from pain they have never suffered. Many want to give our children what we were denied. We are often not well enough to recognize what their needs are as we take care of our inner child through them.
We are overcompensating because no one was there during our childhood to protect us.
Many parents develop an unhealthy relationship with children whom they have been living to protect. Children find themselves incapable of understanding reality with poor, abusive leadership.
I am reading an excellent book called Emotional Inheritance—one of the many books I recommend for anyone trying to understand recovery from trauma.
